In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can activate spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging since there are two connector pins, and they perform different functions but the most effective way to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a massive decrease in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, 3 were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole, and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I'm assuming the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is connected, but still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, i feel i have pretty much eliminated everything else. But i am afraid I might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or from a parts store. It is easy to test them - just put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines requires to know the position and speed the crankshaft to determine timing of the fuel injector, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these goes bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.

The signs of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or a misfire when in gear. 5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a variety of issues in your vehicle.
